Painting is often about illusion. I am finding that when I paint, I am often mediating between the reality of the paint, its metaphoric possibilities, and an illusionistic image, likeness or space. The resolution for me is a painting about different possible realities. This process has caused me to seriously ask the questions: How do I perceive the world? Is my reality only mine, or is my reality tied to all peoples, creating one? Does the act of perceiving create or alter reality? We know that reality (or our perception of it) appears to change with different scales and changing speeds. I am beginning think that our reality is “corporeal-centric” or rooted in our bodies and our experiences. This point of view can be explored by contemporary physics as well. I am inspired by the idea that our perception might create our reality. This notion gives me a starting place to use paint to ask more questions. Can multiple places really exist in the same space? Does how I experience and perceive reality actually alter it? How do I navigate through the unfamiliar? How do I make sense of chaos? Using multiples, transparent layering, maps, photographs, and patterns, I am attempting to make paintings that ask these questions, or possibly the paintings become questions themselves. I am experimenting. |
